WHO WE SERVE
Koinonia serves adults with mild to profound intellectual and/or developmental disabilities
(I/DD). A
developmental disability is a life-long condition that occurs before age 22. It
affects a person’s daily functioning, limiting him/her in three or more of the
following areas: self-care, self-direction, economic self-sufficiency,
independent living, learning, receptive and expressive language and mobility.
Developmental disabilities encompass a wide range of diagnoses, including Down
Syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, Fragile X syndrome, and mental retardation.
Many of these individuals face additional challenges, including physical and
learning disabilities, medical issues like diabetes and asthma, and psychiatric
disorders. Mental health issues are more likely to occur in people with
developmental disabilities than in the general population.
